Visiting Pompeii from Naples cruise port is one of the most popular day trips—and it’s very doable with a bit of planning.
I’ve been to Naples several times, including on a cruise, and also visited Pompeii by train, so I’ve seen how it works in real conditions.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the simplest ways to get there, how much time you need, and whether it’s worth doing on a cruise stop.
Naples Cruise Port (Quick Overview)
Cruise ships dock at Stazione Marittima (Molo Beverello), right in the center of Naples.

The terminal is well-equipped, with shops, cafés, and easy access to taxis and excursions.
As you step outside, you’re within walking distance of the historic center, with landmarks like Castel Nuovo nearby.
The Naples Metro (Municipio station) is just across the square, so it is easy to reach the main train station or other parts of the city.

🛳️ Check out my Naples cruise port guide if you need detailed info on the cruise terminal, transport, and top things to do in port.
How Far Is Pompeii from Naples Cruise Port?
Pompeii is about 25 km (15.5 miles) from Naples cruise port.
- By train: ~30 minutes (plus transfer time)
- By taxi/private car: 30–60 minutes, depending on traffic
- Total travel time: plan at least 1 hour each way
The distance isn’t far, but traffic and transfers can add time, so always leave a buffer.
How Far Is Naples Train Station from the Port?
The main station, Napoli Centrale (Garibaldi), is about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the cruise terminal.
- Taxi: 10–25 minutes, depending on traffic
- Metro: Line 1 from Municipio → Piazza Garibaldi (3 stops), with a 10-minute walk from the port to the station
- On foot: 30–40 minutes from the port to Napoli Centrale

Once you arrive at Napoli Centrale (Garibaldi), follow the signs to the Circumvesuviana trains and take the line toward Sorrento for Pompeii.
Best Ways to Get from Naples Cruise Port to Pompeii
Train (Most Popular DIY Option)
The train is the cheapest and most common way to reach Pompeii.
From the port, get to Napoli Centrale, then take the Circumvesuviana train toward Sorrento and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri.
- Travel time: ~30 minutes
- Cost: ~€3–4 one way
- Frequency: every ~30 minutes
- Station location: right across from the ruins

You can buy tickets at the station, via the GoEav app, or use contactless payment.
For more comfort, the Campania Express offers AC and reserved seats.
Trains can be crowded, especially in summer. Keep an eye on your belongings.
Check the official Circumvesuviana and Campania Express website for updated schedules and availability before your trip.
Taxi / Private Transfer (Most Comfortable Option)
Taxis are available right outside the cruise terminal.
Many drivers offer round trips with waiting time or short tours that include stops like Mount Vesuvius or Herculaneum.
- Travel time: 30–60 minutes
- Cost: ~€80–150 per vehicle (round trip)
Always agree on the price before starting.
This option works well for families or small groups.
👉 Tip: If you don’t want to negotiate, pre-book a private transfer for a fixed price.
Guided Tours (Easiest Option)
Guided tours are the simplest way to visit Pompeii without worrying about logistics.
Cruise line excursions
- Guaranteed return to ship
- Easy and fully organized
- Usually more expensive and larger groups
Independent tours
- Smaller groups or private options
- More flexible and often cheaper
- You need to manage timing yourself
Many operators are used to cruise schedules and plan return times accordingly.

Rental Car (Not Recommended)
Renting a car is possible, but not ideal for a cruise stop.
Traffic in Naples is busy, driving can be stressful, and parking near Pompeii is limited.
You also need to watch for restricted traffic zones (ZTL).
This only makes sense if you’re continuing your trip beyond Pompeii.
How Much Time Do You Need for Pompeii?
- Short visit: 2–3 hours inside the ruins
- Typical visit: 3–4 hours to see main highlights
- With travel: plan 4–6 hours total from the port
Pompeii is large, so it’s better to focus on key areas rather than trying to see everything.
What to Expect at Pompeii Archaeological Park
Pompeii is a large open-air archaeological site, and visiting it requires some planning, especially on a cruise day.
Tickets and Opening Hours
Standard entry is around €18–19 when booked through the official website.
- Under 18: free entry
- EU citizens 18–25: reduced price
Third-party tickets are usually more expensive but may include extras like skip-the-line access or guided tours.
When I visited, there were also licensed guides available at the entrance if you prefer to decide on the spot.
💡 Tip: Booking in advance helps avoid lines, especially in peak season.

Opening hours:
- April–October: 9:00–19:00 (last entry ~17:30)
- November–March: 9:00–17:00 (last entry ~15:30)
- Closed: January 1, May 1, December 25
Prices and hours can change slightly, so it’s worth checking before your visit.
How Much Time You Need in Pompeii
For cruise visitors, 2–3 hours is usually enough to see the main highlights.
Pompeii is very large, so it’s best to focus on key areas rather than trying to cover everything.
Top Things to See in Pompeii
If you’re short on time, focus on these key highlights:
- The Forum – the main square and center of ancient life
- The Baths – well-preserved interiors and mosaics
- The Amphitheater – one of the oldest Roman arenas
- Plaster Casts – one of the most powerful parts of the visit
- Villa of the Mysteries – famous frescoes (farther walk, optional)

A guided tour can help you cover these more efficiently without wasting time.
